Ballet and dance classes in Basel, Braswell Arts Center (BAC), a conversation with Armando & Lisa Braswell.
“Basel is a welcoming city, and the more you engage with the community, the more it will start to feel like home.”
Armando and Lisa, can you tell us about yourselves, your family, and your life in Basel?
Lisa: We are a multicultural family living in Basel, and we absolutely love it here. We are both originally from New York City and met in a performing arts high school. So we have been together for over 25 years. We moved to Basel in 2012 when Armando joined Ballett Theater Basel, and the city quickly became home.
Armando: We have two energetic boys who are the heart of our lives and even help out with the studio—when we ask nicely, of course. Basel has been the perfect place for our family, with its mix of international culture, world-class art, and close-knit community. We have built such a strong connection here, both personally and professionally.
Armando, you have an impressive background in dance and are a sought-after teacher, instructing at some of the world’s most prestigious schools and competitions. What inspired you to start a dance studio in Basel?
Armando: Thank you. Opening the Braswell Arts Center was a natural next step for me. After years of performing and teaching internationally, I wanted to create a space where everyone—regardless of age, background, or body type—could experience the joy of dance and the arts. I also had a vision for young professional dancers and wanted to create a pre-professional program that I would want to join. Basel’s vibrant and diverse community made it the ideal place to bring these visions to life.
BAC is a real family business. You run the studio together, and even your two boys are involved. What is it like running a family business?
Lisa: It is an amazing experience, though it can be challenging at times. Armando and I complement each other perfectly—I handle logistics, client management, and operations, while Armando focuses on artistic development, fundraising, and public relations. Our boys are also involved as counselors during holiday camps, which has been a great way for them to learn responsibility and connect with other children.

How has that shaped the vision for the studio?
Armando: Being a family business has influenced everything we do. We have worked hard to create a space that feels like home for other families. We always tell people there is no need to overexplain — we have children of our own.
“BAC is about being welcoming, supportive, and inclusive—values that come directly from our own experiences as a family.“
Can you tell us about how your family works together to make the studio a welcoming space for other families?
Armando: From the moment you walk in, there is a New York vibe—I just want to say that. We focus on creating a friendly and approachable atmosphere. Lisa and I are both very hands-on, and our boys bring their own energy to the space, whether they’re popping in for a cupcake or iced tea from our Arts Café in the reception area or helping out during holiday camps. We also make an effort to listen to feedback from parents and students, ensuring the studio reflects the needs of our community.
What do you think makes Braswell Arts Center unique?
Lisa: I think it’s our combination of professionalism, warmth, and live music. We offer high-quality dance classes with live music and innovative arts programs, but it is the sense of belonging and community that sets us apart. There is a place for everyone at BAC.

Do you think dance can help families and children integrate into a new community? Can you share any stories about students who’ve found connections through your studio?
Armando: Absolutely. Dance is a universal language that can break down barriers. Every child who comes to BAC has a story of finding new connections. Our community speaks over 35 languages. Our pre-professional students are from all over the world, and every dancer has a story of searching for their place. It is incredible to see their confidence grow as they connect with peers through dance.
“Parents often tell us how much it helps them adjust to life in Basel and that coming to BAC feels like a piece of home.“
What types of classes or activities do you offer for school-age children?
Lisa: We offer a wide range of programs, including Ballet, Contemporary Dance, Hip-Hop, Jazz, and Creative Movement. For younger children, we focus on building coordination and confidence in a fun, supportive environment. We also run holiday camps that combine dance, art, music, and outings, which are perfect for school-age kids.
Are there any programs that you might recommend to families who are new to Basel?
Armando: Our holiday camps are a great starting point. They are fun and provide a wonderful way for kids to make friends and for parents to meet other families. For those interested in dance, our beginner and open classes are welcoming and low-pressure, making them ideal for newcomers.

Lastly, do you have any advice for expat families who have just relocated or are planning to relocate to Basel?
Lisa: My advice would be to get involved as soon as you can—join classes, participate in message boards, and attend local events. Basel is a welcoming city, and the more you engage with the community, the more it will start to feel like home.
