What is the typical meal and snack-time schedule at a daycare in Switzerland?
A typical day at a Swiss daycare starts with children and staff having breakfast, followed by a snack (zNüni), at around 9.00, then lunch, and another snack (zVieri) at 16.00.
- Morning snack time (zNüni) usually consist of a variety of fruits, bread, and non-sweetened drinks. Some daycare centers also bake bread with the older children.
- The lunch menu at daycare centers in Switzerland changes daily. Most daycare centers share the weekly menu plan on their website or in the parent app. Some daycare centers only provide vegetarian meals.
- Afternoon snack time (zVieri) usually consist of a variety of fruits, vegetables, and non-sweetened drinks.
- Few daycare centers offer dinner.
Do daycare centers in Switzerland have their own kitchen?
Meals at daycare centers in Switzerland have their own kitchen and employ dedicated full-time kitchen staff. Smaller daycare centers that do not have their own kitchen facilities receive fresh daily meal deliveries from a catering service or a nearby nursing home.
Babies and toddlers
For babies and toddlers, parents can bring breast milk in labeled containers, formula, baby food, or other home-cooked meals. As your child gets older, the daycare center will work with your family to support the transition to lunch and snacks provided by the daycare.
From our experience, daycare centers in Switzerland actively engage with parents on establishing meal routines that align with the child’s needs and the parents’ preferences.
We encourage you to inquire about the food philosophy with your preferred daycare centers if that is important to you.
