The Montessori Primary School program is designed to meet each child’s unique pace, interests, and learning style. In a child-centered environment, students are encouraged to choose activities that spark their curiosity and work through them at their own pace.

As children progress through the Primary years, their learning becomes increasingly comprehensive, encouraging children to explore more abstract concepts, engage in collaborative learning, and deepen their understanding of the world.

Through this approach, Montessori Primary education offers a range of learning experiences that support academic, social, emotional, and intellectual development.

Montessori, a hands-on and personalized approach.

The Montessori Primary School Curriculum contains the following areas of learning:

– Practical Life:

Building on the foundation laid in earlier years, Practical Life activities now focus on organizational skills, responsibility, and community engagement. Students learn to manage their time, prioritize tasks, and work with tools like work plans to develop independence and accountability.

– Math:

Mathematics in Primary School shifts from concrete materials to more abstract concepts. Students explore advanced topics like fractions, geometry, and algebra through hands-on tools and self-directed exploration, reinforcing a deep understanding of mathematical principles.

– Language:

Language development continues through comprehensive studies in grammar, spelling, and writing. Students read and write texts, and learn how to express their ideas.

– Cultural Studies:

An interdisciplinary area that integrates history, geography, science, and the arts. Through hands-on lessons and research, children explore the interconnectedness of the natural world, human history, and different cultures.

– Science and Social Studies:

Guided by inspiring stories that introduce concepts like the formation of the universe and human evolution—students delve into subjects such as geology, biology, physics, and history. These studies help children understand the interdependency of living systems and inspire them to contribute to a better world.

As in earlier years, one of the hallmarks of the Montessori curriculum is uninterrupted blocks of work time. Lasting 2–3 hours, these blocks allow students to focus deeply on their chosen activities. During this time, students move freely between tasks, working individually, or in small groups.

Montessori education believes that working with uninterrupted work time helps students with concentration, self-discipline, and independence while allowing them to explore their own interests. It is during these uninterrupted work blocks that children often make most progress.

Imagination does not become great until human beings, given the courage and strength, use it to create.”

Dr. Maria Montessori

In a Montessori Primary classroom, teachers observe and guide. They introduce new materials, provide lessons tailored to each child’s interests and developmental stage, and support them as they take responsibility for their own learning.

Teachers foster intrinsic motivation and independence by encouraging children to ask questions, explore new ideas, and pursue their passions. Montessori educators believe that this approach instills confidence and nurtures a love of learning.

In Switzerland, there are several wonderful Montessori Schools to explore.
